Parenting Neurodivergent Children
I’ve been working on another project with an occupational therapy doctoral student, looking at the daily life implications of parenting a neurodivergent child, focusing on parents’ well-being.
Parenting a neurodivergent child can be deeply rewarding. At the same time, it often comes with unique challenges, especially as you find yourself taking on roles beyond that of “parent” while navigating complex healthcare systems.
Interviews revealed several common ideas and sentiments among participants including how family dynamics have changed, how their work has been impacted, and feelings of guilt, overwhelm, and exhaustion. Three main themes were identified and used as general topics for the final deliverables: (1) adjustments to daily life, (2) parental burnout, (3) steps to take after diagnosis.
We’ve created resources that were shaped by conversations with parents who have walked this path. Our goal is to share their insights and experiences to help you feel less alone — and to offer practical information, supportive strategies, and compassionate guidance to help you care for your child while prioritizing the well-being of you and your whole family.
